Patio and pool deck coatings in Houston
Outdoor concrete gets full Texas sun, rain and bare feet, so it needs a different coating than the garage. The contractor can coat patios, porches, walkways and pool decks with UV-stable systems and texture for grip.

Outdoor floors need a UV-stable coating
Epoxy is an indoor coating. It can yellow in sunlight, and Rust-Oleum labels its EpoxyShield garage kit for covered areas only, not carports or floors in direct sun. Outdoors, installers use UV-stable polyaspartic topcoats, which Concrete Network describes as suited to surfaces exposed to sunlight, or acrylic-based overlays.
Grip comes first around a pool
A glossy coating on wet concrete is slippery. For pool decks and steps, ask for a textured finish: anti-slip aggregate in the topcoat, a partial flake broadcast, or a textured overlay. Ask to see and walk on a wet sample.
Keeping a deck cooler underfoot
Dark colors get hot in the sun, so light blends make sense around a pool. Two textured options are common on Sun Belt pool decks:
- Kool Deck, a trademarked surface applied to freshly poured concrete. Rosie on the House reports it lowers the surface temperature by about 20 degrees, more than other deck materials. It has to go on before the concrete cures, so it's mostly for new decks.
- Acrylic textured overlays, a thin polymer-cement coat over new or existing concrete. Cooler than plain concrete, though not as cool as Kool Deck, and they can mimic stone or tile.
Ask the contractor which systems they install and what each needs for upkeep. Rosie on the House advises against power-washing these surfaces.

Questions people ask
Can I use the same coating on my patio as my garage?
Only if it's UV-stable. A polyaspartic topcoat works outside; an epoxy-only floor will yellow and break down in the sun.
Can an old, cracked pool deck be coated?
Usually. Cracks are repaired first, and a textured overlay or coating goes over the top. Kool Deck itself goes on fresh concrete, so an existing deck usually gets an acrylic overlay or a coating instead.
