Epoxy garage floors in Houston
Epoxy is the original garage floor coating. It costs less than polyaspartic, builds up thick enough to smooth over minor flaws in the slab, and is still the most common base coat under flake floors.

Solid-color and metallic epoxy
- Solid color. A pigmented epoxy in gray, tan or another single color, often with a clear topcoat. Simple, clean, and easy to touch up.
- Metallic. Epoxy with metallic pigments worked by hand to make swirls and depth, popular for showroom garages, home gyms and shops. Bob Vila lists metallic material alone at $5 to $12 per square foot, so it costs more than a flake floor.
- Epoxy base under flakes. Many flake floors use an epoxy base coat with a polyaspartic topcoat.
Professional epoxy vs store kits
Store kits run $50 to $600, according to Bob Vila, and the epoxy in most of them isn't what a crew rolls down. Bob Vila lists water-based epoxy at $30 to $50 a gallon and 100% solids epoxy at $45 to $150 a gallon. Solids content is what makes a thick, hard film. Concrete Network notes 100% solids epoxy takes two to three days to apply properly. The DIY vs professional guide covers when a kit is enough.
Where epoxy falls short
- Sunlight. Epoxy can yellow in UV. Rust-Oleum's EpoxyShield kit is labeled for covered garages only, not carports or areas in direct sun. Use a polyaspartic topcoat if the floor gets sun.
- Cure time. Concrete Network says you can walk on epoxy after 24 hours, but cars should stay off for about a week until it's fully cured. Bob Vila gives 3 days for vehicles. Follow your installer's product.
- Hot tires. Epoxy-only floors are more prone to lifting under hot tires than floors with a harder polyaspartic topcoat.
- Cool, humid days. Concrete Network says not to apply epoxy below 50°F. Rust-Oleum's kit asks for 60 to 85°F, relative humidity under 80%, and nights no cooler than 65°F for a day or two after.
Houston timing
Humidity is the bigger issue here than cold. Houston's relative humidity often starts the day above 90% and falls to about 60% by afternoon. Pros plan coating times around it and check that the slab surface stays above the dew point, so moisture doesn't condense on the fresh coat.
What epoxy floors cost
| Floor size | Typical installed price |

| Two-car, about 360 sq ft | $1,100 to $4,300 |
| Three- to four-car | $1,700 to $9,500 |
Angi and HomeAdvisor data via Bob Vila: $1,595 to $3,337 for most jobs, national average $2,441, or $3 to $12 per square foot installed.

Questions people ask
Does epoxy turn yellow?
It can, in sunlight. That's why epoxy is usually kept indoors or covered with a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat.
How long does an epoxy garage floor last?
Angi puts epoxy floors at 10 to 20 years, depending on the material and how hard the floor is used. Prep is the biggest factor.
Can epoxy go over an old coating?
Not if the old coating is failing. Rust-Oleum's instructions say to remove old paint that fails a tape test. Contractors usually grind off old coatings so the new one bonds to bare concrete. See garage floor repair.
